Uzès

Uzès, first duchy of France

A golden-stone town explored on foot, a market on Saturdays, the Pont du Gard twenty minutes away.

Living in Uzès for a few days

Uzès is not a museum town. On Saturdays the market is the locals' market; on weekdays the bakeries open at 6.30 and the workshops of Rue de la République work with the door open. Staying in the centre means living at that pace: coffee under the arcades, shopping on foot, children playing on the Promenade des Marronniers.

Our stays in the historic centre sit within three minutes of the Place aux Herbes: Maison Belon and its four apartments on Impasse José Belon, Le Saint Julien on Rue Saint-Julien. A little further, ten minutes on foot, Lou de Laly and La Loggia d'Uzès add the quiet of a residence, a terrace and, for the first, a pool.

Getting around

The centre is pedestrian or nearly so. Cars park on the boulevards or in the car parks at the edge of town. The bus station, seven minutes from Maison Belon, serves Nîmes, Bagnols-sur-Cèze and the Pont du Gard with liO buses. For the villages a car remains simpler; the residence apartments have parking.

When to come

Spring and autumn are the mildest; summer is hot and lively, with the July festivals; winter is quiet, with the truffle market from December to March. Uzès is worth visiting all year, and the centre apartments rent by the month off season.
